The Importance of Hydration

Body basics

The key to staying healthy is ‘water’ and a healthy person needs to 30 to 50 ounces of water a day. Older adults need to drink even more. Stay hydrated with CBD-isolate infused beverages, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

Water carries nutrients to every system in your body—heart, brain, and muscles. And it flushes bacteria from your bladder and supports proper bowel function.

Water accounts for 60% of your body weight, so a person that weighs 155 pounds consists of about 92 pounds of water.

If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

Hydration and older adults

Older adults often risk becoming dehydrated because they don’t “sense” thirst as much as they did when they were younger. This can be particularly problematic if they take medication that causes water loss, such as a diuretic.

To avoid dehydration, drink water, or other beverages, periodically throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. If you spread your water intake over the day, it puts less stress on your kidneys. An easy way to stay hydrated is to drink fluids with every meal and when you take your medications.

Benefits of staying hydrated

Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp, your mood stable, and your motivation in tact. Additional benefits include

  1. prevent dry mouth. Dry mouth can cause bad breath and promotes cavities.
  2. promotes cardiovascular health. When you are dehydrated, your heart has to work harder to get enough oxygen to your cells. This makes everyday activities harder.
  3. keeps your body cool. Our bodies release heat by expanding blood vessels that are close to the surface of the skin. This results in more blood flow and allows heat to dissipate more quickly.
  4. lubricates your muscles and joints to keep them moving more efficiently.
  5. keeps skin supple. Dehydrated skin is less elastic.
  6. cleanses your body, inside and out. Your kidneys need water to filter waste from the blood.

Drink water throughout the day

Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day. Some people need more, some less. If you’re worried that you’re not drinking enough water, check your urine. Light yellow is good. Dark yellow or darker, you need water and you may be dehydrated.

Water is best for staying hydrated; however you can obtain fluids from other sources, such as

  • fruits and vegetables
  • soup
  • milk
  • herbal tea
  • soda, and
  • even coffee.

However, it’s best to limit your caffeine intake because it can cause some people to feel anxious or jumpy. Sports drinks are another good choice, but often contain a lot of sugar and sodium.
