In this post we are going to explore one of the benefits of CBD–weight loss support. Everyday there are new claims and anecdotal evidence of the efficacy of CBD for weight loss. Additionally, research indicates that CBD can help you lose weight and reduce the risk of weight-related diseases like diabetes and other metabolic disorders, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Our bodies have a built-in endocannabinoid system and this system is designed to work with cannabinoids like CBD and THC. Two main receptors of the endocannibinoid system, CB1 and CB2, respond to different compounds in the body.
CB1 receptors exist mainly in the brain and central nervous system. Although CB1 receptors are rare in others parts of the body, there is an exception with obese individuals. CB1 receptors become more prevalent in fatty tissue. Because of this, researchers believe there is a connection between the activation of the CB1 receptors and obesity.
CBD does not activate the receptors directly, instead CBD influences the cannabinoids naturally in the body to either block or activate the receptors. The ability to block the receptors may play a role in supporting weight loss in an individual.
Does CBD reduce appetite
Unlike THC, CBD does not cause the “munchies”, and may actually suppress the appetite. Instead, CBD appears to influence other molecules to block or deactivate the CB1 receptors, thereby suppressing the appetite. Blocking the CB1 receptors may prevent overeating in some individuals allowing them to lose weight.
It is important to keep in mind that there have been no direct human studies to prove or support the efficacy of CBD for weight loss.
CBD turns bad fat into good fat
Proponents of CBD claim that it can convert white (or bad) fat into brown (or good) fat. It is also believed that white fat increases the risk of many chronic conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
Brown fat is believed to help the body burn calories. A 2016 study supports the claim that CBD helps the body break down fat more efficiently. Again, more research is needed to confirm that CBD prevents obesity and supports weight loss.
CBD burns fat
As mentioned earlier, CBD appears to melt away fat in the body and helping to eliminate it from the body as waste. The process of turning white fat cells into brown fat cells actually changes how the cells in the body act. Brown fat cells burn off energy as heat, meaning that they actually burn calories.
My personal experience
I have been using CBD regularly since July 2019. I take a daily concentration of 33mg. I have achieved positive result in many areas. For example
- my A1C value decreased to 5.7 from 6.1
- blood sugar dropped from 126 or higher to 102
- weight loss of 25 pounds
- total cholesterol numbers went down, and
- I quit taking acid-reflux medication.
It is important to note that my results were supported by daily exercise and a healthy diet plan. Results will vary based on your personal metabolism and overall general health.
Is CBD right for you?
As an informed consumer, you have the power to determine if CBD is right for you. Before you start using CBD, have a conversation with your physician, because CBD may interact with other prescribed medications you take.
Liquid capsules or gummies are a good option for people who are trying to lose weight or suppress their appetite. Both of these options deliver a consistent dose of CBD daily, unlike tinctures in which dosing can be trickier. CBD, like other prescribed medications, has to be taken regularly for you to receive maximum benefits.
